Why There Isn’t One Breathing Technique That Works for Everyone
A gentle introduction to a more personal approach to breathwork
Many people come to breathwork hoping for a simple answer. They often ask, “Can you just show me the breathing technique that works for anxiety.
When you feel anxious, panicky and overwhelmed you want something that will help you feel calmer and more relaxed.
But here’s something important to understand there isn’t one breathing technique that works for everyone.
We’re not all starting from the same place, each of us has a different nervous system, shaped by our life experiences.
Some people feel constantly on edge, their system is alert, busy and finds it hard to settle.
Others feel flat and exhausted energy, low mood, and disconnected from themselves their bodies need very different support.
So it wouldn’t make sense to give them the same breathing practice.
Why One-Size-Fits-All Can Be Unhelpful
There are many breathing techniques shared online, some are calming, some are more energising and can be taught in a structured way. You try it and think “I must be doing it wrong. ”but most of the time you’re not doing it wrong at all.
the practice just isn’t right for you in that moment.
A More Personal Way to Work With the Breath
In my work, we don’t begin with a fixed technique. We begin with you, with breath awareness, noticing with compassionate curiosity where you are now, you simply come as you are and we begin from there.
We pay attention to how your body responds. Your breath reflects your nervous system,
It shows us what your body has been dealing with, often over a long period of time.
I then offer different techniques for you to try and explain how they work directly on your nervous system
If something helps you feel more settled, we follow that. If it doesn’t feel right, we change it working with your body, gently, respectfully and at your own pace. Breathwork isn’t about doing anything perfectly, It’s about discovering what helps you feel calmer, steadier and relaxed and that will look a little different for everyone.
