Why There Isn’t One Breathing Technique That Works for Everyone
A gentle introduction to a more personal approach to breathwork
Many people come to breathwork hoping for a simple answer. They often ask, “Can you just show me the breathing technique that works?” And it’s a completely natural question.
When you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or not quite yourself, you want something reliable. Something that will help you feel calmer and more steady.
But here’s something important to understand there isn’t one breathing technique that works for everyone.
We’re not all starting from the same place, each of us has a different nervous system, shaped by our life experiences.
Some people feel constantly on edge, their system is alert, busy, and finds it hard to settle.
Others feel flat and exhausted energy, low mood, and disconnected from themselves their bodies need very different support.
So it wouldn’t make sense to give them the same breathing practice.

Why One-Size-Fits-All Can Be Unhelpful
There are many breathing techniques shared online.
Some are calming.
Some are more energising.
Some are quite structured.
But without understanding your body, even a well-known technique can feel uncomfortable or simply not work.
This is often when people start to think:
“I must be doing it wrong.”
But most of the time…
You’re not doing it wrong at all.
The practice just isn’t right for you in that moment.
A More Personal Way to Work With the Breath
In my work, we don’t begin with a fixed technique.
We begin with you.
We gently notice how your breath is already moving.
There’s no judgement — just awareness.
From there, we might explore small, simple adjustments.
• Slowing the breath slightly
• Allowing it to move lower into the body
• Softening areas of tension
• Or sometimes, simply noticing without changing anything at all
We pay attention to how your body responds.
If something helps you feel more settled, we follow that.
If it doesn’t feel right, we change it.
Working With Your Body, Not Against It
Your breath reflects your nervous system.
It shows us what your body has been dealing with, often over a long period of time.
So rather than trying to control it or “fix” it…
We work with it.
Gently.
Respectfully.
At your own pace.
This is where real change often begins.
You Don’t Need to Get It Right
If you’ve tried breathing exercises before and they didn’t help, you’re not alone.
And it doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
It may simply mean that approach didn’t suit your body at that time.
Breathwork isn’t about doing it perfectly.
It’s about discovering what helps you feel calmer, steadier, and more like yourself again.
And that will look a little different for everyone.
A Gentle Invitation
You don’t need to arrive calm.
You don’t need to know how to do it.
You simply come as you are.
And from there, we begin.
